Smart Trailer — Tiny House Trailer
The Smart Trailer is the result of years of real‑world testing and refinement. Version 3 is lighter, stronger, and more adaptable than ever — giving you a safe, stable, and future‑proof base for your tiny home or cabin. Whether you’re building DIY or working with a builder, this system makes the whole process easier, safer, and more flexible.
Key Features
Width and Length
Two common widths of 2.4m and 2.95m, can do any width up to 3.1m.
Lengths range from 3.6m to 10.8m at 0.6m intervals, can do any length in between. Intervals of 0.6m are designed around standard building materials. We also run the popular 8 and 10m lengths.
Wheel Dolly
The Smart Trailer uses a removable and adjustable wheel dolly in either a road legal or site configuration.
Road - Frame, wheels, axles, suspension, brakes and mudguards
Site - Frame, wheels, axles
Adjustable Wheel Dolly
The dolly slides forward or back so you can set the perfect tow‑bar weight for your build. This gives you safer towing, less sway, and the freedom to place your tiny house where it suits the design — not where the axles force you to.
Detachable Trailer
The chassis unbolts from the deck or house. This means you can take the trailer for a WOF without moving the whole home, reuse the trailer for other jobs, or lower the house for truck transport.
Low 600mm Floor Height
A low, flat, stable deck makes framing and cladding easier. It also keeps your tiny home closer to the ground for better access and a more natural look.
Drawbar Mounts on Both Ends
If you’re manoeuvring into a tight site, you can mount the drawbar on either end. This gives you more control and makes positioning your tiny home much easier.
Multi‑Use Trailer
Once your tiny home is in place, the trailer can be repurposed as a 3.5T utility trailer. Your investment keeps working for you.
Accessories
The 'Smart Trailer' platform offers a variety of pre-designed accessories ready for use. If lifting jacks are unnecessary, simply don't choose them. Desire a trailer without suspension or brakes? Or perhaps a water tank? The options are customizable to your needs.
Use Multiple Decks
If you're considering building two tiny houses, perhaps adding another later, or entering the rental cabin business, purchasing a single drawbar and dolly along with multiple decks can maximize the value of your system.
Lightweight but Strong
We use 3D modelling, strength‑testing software, and CNC laser‑cut components to remove unnecessary weight while keeping the structure strong. This helps you stay within towing limits without compromising safety.
Thermal Subfloor
Steel conducts heat quickly, so we offer a timber‑and‑insulation subfloor that keeps your home warmer, drier, and more energy‑efficient. It’s one of the smartest upgrades you can make.

2.95m wide site trailer
2.4m wide road trailer
1 Width
Standard deck widths are 2.4m and 2.95m, allowing for a 75mm clearance on each side for cladding, guttering, and the like. It is possible to accommodate other widths up to 3.1m, though will incur additional cost.
A 2.4m wide, one-piece deck is hot-dip galvanized.
For widths of 2.55m or greater, utilize a removable pre-galvanized deck that is bolted onto a hot-dip galvanized chassis.
2 Length
Select length form 3.6m to 10.8m.
600mm increments also can do any length in between.
Deck joists are placed at 600mm centers.
3 Dolly
Will your house be transported on the road or by truck? We offer two options: a road-legal setup and a less expensive site wheel dolly.
Each dolly includes a robust laser-cut and folded hot-dip galvanized drawbar.
Width of dolly and drawbar does not exceed 2.3m
Generally, tiny houses exceeding 8 meters in length will weigh more than 3.5T.
Site
Is the same design as the Road dolly but with road going components removed. The house and trailer are designed for transport to the site by truck, yet they can be moved on-site on their wheels. Trailer can travel on road by itself in this configurtion with lights, wof and rego (we can supply).
No brakes, controller, suspension, lights, rego, wof or mudguards. We can add any of these items, please enquire.
Road
It is designed to be road-legal and is suitable for occasional to regular travel, with a rating of 3.5T including the trailer.
Suspension - equalising leaf suspension for a smooth ride and reduces wear and tear.
Brakes - electric with both axles braked not just one.
Brake controller - either hard wired or wireless brake contaoller not included but can be added as an accessory. Runs 2x safely chains standard. For the most part trailer by itself can travel without brakes depending on tow vechile.
Lightboard - removible pre galv bolted to rear of chassis.
Rego 1 year, WOF 3 years.
Basic
The Basic model is essentially the same trailer, just without the deck and at a width of 2.4m.
This trailer is designed to use 90 mm LVL for the sub-floor or similar structure, that we can do or a DIYer or builder.
This model saves cost on the trailer.
Has the advantage of a high R-value subfloor R2.6
Timber joists can be attached to the steel deck via drilling holes and bolting.

Digital Plans
If you're interested in constructing a smart trailer on your own, or if you live too far from Napier to justify transportation costs, it's now feasible for DIY enthusiasts or fabricators to create their own Smart Trailer. We've constructed version 3 using the latest laser cutting and folding technology to minimize weight. The available plans are for version 1, which includes many of the same features and is designed around common steel members.
